Pied Avocet | BPW #44

Pied Avocet

Pied Avocet

I’ve been trying to get a few decent photos of the Pied Avocet for a while. Yesterday we saw this one close to the road in the Bantpolder, so we stopped and I tried to get a few pix. Here’s the first photo with the Avocet flying out of the frame.

Pied Avocet

Cropped

There must have been a nest nearby, because the avocet tried to lure us away. It succeeded quite well, I was happy to follow it. Now if only it would stay still for longer than 2 seconds.

Pied Avocet

As you see I finally managed to get a few shots with the bird actually in the frame.

I still hope to get a few close-ups one day :-)

  • Wow, what a gorgeous bird. Those are great in-flight shots, Gwendolen! Excellent job!
  • Thanks for all the comments guys. :)
  • What a beautiful bird! Very nice photos!
  • Closeups are overrated. These are beautiful. Gorgeous bird. I've never seen one of these before.
  • LOL @ overrated. :-))

    Thanks treeclowns.
  • Super in-flight captures of the Pied Avocet Gwen! If it was easy photographing birds, I'm sure we wouldn't enjoy it as much as we do right? These are excellent shots and I'm sure you will get the opportunity at some point to get your close-ups.

Gorgeous bird set against the grassy fields.
  • Those are outstanding flight shots, Gwen! I'm sure you'll get your close-up one of these days.
  • Gorgeous shots these - full of action! They really capture the beauty of the bird.
  • ...a striking bird with beautiful plumage -- and I love the flight shots!! Hovering over the field of grass is so peaceful...gorgeous!

I really like this series Gwen, especially since Pied Avocets are another favorite of mine. If they're upset with you they're not shy about it and I've been nearly divebombed by them (and stilts too) more than once. The little hotheads. ;)

These flight shots are great, Gwen, but all of us leave a better shot in the field -- just waiting for another day's photography.
  • Nice - even if not perfect in your eyes, the top one gives a good look at the bird. My first thought was "I can see where it got the name!"
  • stunning shots - great job. I tried to videoscope them in flight recently in Italy, with limited success.
  • A stunning looking bird. I've never actually seen onw with a bill like that.
  • Close-ups would be nice - but - those are great in-flight shots!
  • You did very well to get what you did, know how you feel great photos.
