Rooftop heron

I haven’t had much time to go on birdwatching walkabout lately. Yesterday morning I was sitting at the kitchen table and spotted this grey heron on our neighbour’s chimney. Lots of grey herons hang out at the canal here. They usually accompany the fishermen. It is quite a common sight to see them standing side by side, staring into the murky depths of the canals.

Anyway, I grabbed my camera and ran outside.

  • ...glad you were paying attention. I would love to catch a heron on a chimney! Cool series...
  • Cool series Gwen. That's the bird that looks like our Great Blue Heron but lacks the brown on the thighs and neck. Beautiful. I love the "launch" shot too. Funny, I saw a Great Blue Heron atop a high power transmission line last year. I think they are about 100 feet tall. I had never seen one up that high before either.
  • Beautiful!
    I don't think I've ever seen one on a rooftop :)
  • Lucky that I wait for you!
  • Oh, what a fun series of photos! I love the one of the heron taking off!

Great series of photographs, Gwen. I agree with Amy, it is unusual to see a heron on a rooftop. :-)

Nice shots, Gwen. It seems strange to see a heron on a rooftop. He belongs at the water's edge, scanning intently. Maybe he has an identity crisis? ;)
  • Madahmas
Yep. that is one wide wing span!
  • Great photo shows the wingspan really well.
  • Great!
Lucky to have a grey heron as a neighbour!!!
    Regards
  • gret shots of the heron. We have some of them here too.
  • I'm with Mick - the "launch" photo is the best.
  • Great photos - especially good the way you have caught the bird flying off.
